Student Handbook - Please Review Before Class

Please be sure to review our Ceramics Student Handbook before you begin classes. Information about materials, spaces, and studio policies are included. 

Our studio offers a range of stoneware clay and porcelain clay for students to purchase for use during classes. 

Stoneware are high temperature clays, usually light brown in color and fired to high temperatures or cone 10 (about 2350 F). Its plasticity makes it great for pottery or sculpture. Clay bodies with grog or sand can aid in the drying and firing properties.

Porcelain are smooth white or translucent clays able to withstand stoneware temperatures. Porcelain takes the glazes well, but is temperamental in the forming process and not usually recommended for beginners.

Current stoneware and porcelain available:

• Brown Stoneware - Soldate 60, T2, Cinnamon, Paper Clay, Rods Bod, Dark Brown, Death Valley 
• White Stoneware - B-Mix, B-Mix with Grog, Santa Cruz, Paper Clay, Sculpture 412, Long Beach Blend
• Porcelain - Babu, 6-Tile

Clay for use during our classes must be purchased from our studio, no exceptions. Only work that originates from our studio (current or past quarters) will be fired.

Clay Limits & Purchasing Options

Students can purchase up to 2 bags of clay per class per quarter. If students are enrolled in more than one class, students can purchase a max of 4 bags per quarter regardless of the number of classes that students take per quarter. Please note that Open Studio does not count as a class.

Clay can be purchased online or by phone. Clay can be picked up during their class time with their instructor. Students must provide a copy of their receipt of purchase in order to pick up clay. 

To purchase clay online: 

1. Sign in to your account.
   • If you forgot your log in information. Please use "Forgot Password?" feature to reset account.
   • If you do not have account, click on the button to set up your account. 
2. Once signed in, select the "Purchase Clay Here" button from the top navigation bar. 
3. Add the clay you would like to your cart (max two bags per student per quarter) and proceed to check out. 
4. Your receipt will be sent to your email on file. 
5. Show your receipt to your instructor during your class to pick up your clay. 

To purchase clay by phone: 

1. Call (925) 295-1490
2. Our administrative team will take your clay order over the phone. 
3. A receipt will be sent to your email on file. 
4. Show your receipt to your instructor during your class to pick up your clay. 

*Please note that students CANNOT pick up clay if they have not purchased clay ahead of time.
