Course Classifications

We believe that every artist's journey is unique, and to support this, we have carefully curated five distinct classifications: Exploratory, Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced, and All Levels. These classifications are designed to assist students in navigating our course offerings and selecting the appropriate level that aligns with their current skill level and artistic aspirations. Whether you're embarking on your artistic journey for the first time or seeking to refine your craft at an advanced level, our classifications provide clear guidance on the content, expectations, and opportunities for growth within each course level. From exploring foundational concepts to pushing the boundaries of creativity, our teaching artists are committed to fostering a nurturing environment where students can grow and express themselves artistically.

Exploratory (EXP)

The "Exploratory" level is perfect for students looking to experience a new artistic discipline. Instructors will guide students in understanding the fundamental elements and terminology of the art form while introducing the creative process specific to that discipline. Students will explore foundational ideas and techniques, learning to identify and describe various methods used in the art form. This level is ideal for those looking to start their artistic journey in a specific discipline and gain an understanding of the basics.

Beginning (BEG)

The "Beginning" level is the starting point on a student’s journey into more advanced art courses. Students will learn the basic building blocks of an artistic discipline, which help them create better compositions. Instructors will encourage making creative connections between skills, concepts, and decisions. This level helps students combine these elements to express your ideas, feelings, and concepts through their art, making it perfect for students wanting to go beyond the beginner stage and grow as an artist.

Intermediate (INT)

The "Intermediate" level challenges students to engage in strategic thinking and abstract reasoning. Instructors promote the exploration of various creative solutions and processes. At this stage, students should be capable of blending the elements of their chosen artistic discipline to produce artwork that effectively communicates a specific point of view, idea, mood, or theme. They will learn to create art with a purpose, using suitable processes, tools, and techniques. Moreover, students will delve into researching different artistic styles and start shaping their own distinctive voice and style in the art world. This level is ideal for those seeking to advance their artistic abilities and develop a unique artistic identity.

Advanced (ADV)

The "Advanced" level challenges students to engage in extended thinking to further refine their artistic practice and style. Instructors provide constructive critique and foster the development of intricate ideas. At this stage, students are expected to possess an extensive knowledge and deep understanding of the chosen discipline. They should also have a well-developed artistic voice and style that distinguishes them as artists. Advanced students excel in applying multiple sets of criteria to create and present complex works of art, and they are encouraged to take artistic risks and engage in experimentation throughout their creative process. This level is ideal for those seeking to push the boundaries of their artistic abilities and produce sophisticated and innovative art.

All Levels

"All Levels" classes are open to students regardless of their prior experience or skill level. Instructors in these classes tailor the curriculum to accommodate each student's unique position in their artistic educational journey. Whether a beginner, intermediate, or advanced artist, students will find a supportive environment that caters to their specific needs and allows them to grow and learn at their own pace. These classes are an excellent choice for anyone looking to explore and expand their artistic horizons, regardless of their prior background in art.
